Of Human Bondage The Knesset's Center for Research and Information recently conducted a comprehensive survey to examine the public's attitude toward trafficking in women. "There are between 1,000 and 3,000 women in Israel who are subjected to sex slavery, and there is an intensive commerce in women in the country," the editors of the survey wrote. "Because trafficking in women is a social phenomenon, it follows that in order to eradicate it, a systemic approach is essential." According to the survey, the general public perceives the traffic in women as part of the phenomenon of foreign workers in Israel, and as more of a moral problem than a violation of human rights. As a result, the report states, "the phenomenon is remote from the public consciousness." In an open question, interviewees were asked what they think is the major damage done by sex slavery in Israel. An absolute majority cited the harm done to the country's image. Only afterward were other possibilities noted, such as moral damage, an increase in crime, disease, harm to the family, to women, and so on. A larger percentage of Arab interviewees than Jews noted the harm done to the family and the possibility of disease. More Jewish men cited crime, while more Jewish women mentioned harm to the family and violence against women. The survey also found - especially among men - an attitude of forgiveness toward the clients of the women involved. The parliamentary committee on trafficking in women has set itself the goal of promoting a conceptual shift in the attitude toward women who are victims of this trade. The aim is to get the public to view them as victims, rather than criminals. In addition, the committee aims to bring about a stricter approach in regard to those who engage in trafficking, and to place the needs of the women, rather than the interests of the state, at the center of the struggle. To judge by the findings of the survey, which were submitted to the committee on Monday, the MKs involved have a great deal of strenuous work ahead of them.
