Interior Min. to Compensate Employee Fired After Exposing Corruption The Haifa Labor Court criticized this week the actions of the Interior Ministry regarding an employee who said he was fired after exposing corruption and abuse of foreign workers. Judge Ita Katzir ruled that the former employee, Asaf Gerti, is to receive compensation for six months salary (totaling NIS 30,000) and for legal costs (NIS 8,000). However, she rejected his request to be reinstated. Gerty, who served as a coordinator in the ministry's foreign workers unit, reported witnessing an officer beating a worker and enforcement officers receiving flowers from the owner of a nursery who employs foreign workers. Another employee complained the commander of the unit, Amir Gal, pressured a judge to not release any foreigners during hearings held at a jail. Gal is to face disciplinary hearings following the claims. He is on unpaid leave for one month. The Interior Ministry reported they are conducting an evaluation of the unit and its Gal's management over the past three years. Gal and other unit officials told the Labor Court that the problems reported by Gerti are due to the hasty fashion in which the unit was established. However, Judge Katzir rejected this claim, stating, "The plaintiff was ostracized, slandered and persecuted by his colleagues at work? their behavior was effectively backed up by his managers through inaction?" Interior Minister Paz-Pines said in response that the firing seemed problematic and thus is not surprised by the ruling. "The Interior Ministry will respect the ruling in its entirety and I intend to take care of all of the shortcomings raised by the judge," he said.
